UCSF Spine Center Welcomes Three New Faculty

Our group of spine specialists continues to expand, and now serves patients at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco and at clinics in Marin, Napa, Oakland and Berkeley. The three new faculty members who joined in 2018 add to the Center's multidisciplinary expertise in neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and non-operative pain management. 

 


 

Catherine Miller, MD

Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery

Clinical Interests:

  • Complex cervical spine pathologies
  • Spinal deformity
  • Degenerative lumbar spine pathologies
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Motion-preservation spinal surgery

Research Interests:

  • Transplantation of neural stem cells for spinal cord injury

Alekos Theologis, MD

Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery

Clinical Interests:

  • Complex primary and revision spinal disorders for both children and adults
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Cervicothoracic kyphosis
  • Adult scoliosis
  • Lumbar stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Failed back syndrome
  • Tumors

Research Interests:

  • Perioperative management and risk assessment
  • Revision surgery and the management of complications after spine surgery
  • Health policy, global health, and educating the next generation of medical students and residents

Peter Wu, MD, PhD

Peter Wu, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery

Clinical Interests:

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for the optimal management of patients with chronic back, neck, and joint pain
  • Use of electromyogram and nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCS) to evaluate nerve or muscle injuries
  • Multidisciplinary therapies to manage pain
  • Ultrasound and X-ray guided injections to alleviate pain

Research Interests:

  • Regenerative medicines, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
  • Clinical outcome studies for minimally invasive spine interventions
  • Development of novel therapies for musculoskeletal and pain conditions
